Forget the apple. A glass of red wine a day will keep the doctor away. This is not just a random opinion. It’s a scientific fact. Yay! So, if one glass a day is good for me, then 10 glasses per day should give me super powers, right? Sadly, no. It’s all about moderation, the key to life.
Studies show that the health benefits in wine come from something called resveratrol, which is part of a class of phenols called flavonoids. This resveratrol is thought to act like antioxidants (I told you it was scientific), which are the little cancer (and heart disease) fighting buggers that are found not only in grapes, but also in some nuts, berries, and even hops. They mostly come from the skin of the grapes, which is why red wine is touted as having more health benefits than white. If you are a fan of white wine, don’t fret. It’s still good, just not AS good. This resveratrol is also (BONUS) found in chocolate! Could the news get any better?
Many, many studies have been conducted on the subject of the health benefits of drinking wine. A few of them are mentioned here. A Harvard study found in 2007 that drinking wine in moderation (there’s that caveat again) can reduce the risk of heart attacks. Researchers at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine conducted a study of rats in 2015 and found that resveratrol may help prevent age-related memory decline. I’m not sure where exactly all those rats are enjoying happy hour, but I can assure you it is not at Bent Oak Winery. A London study in 2006 found the red wine tannins to lower the risk of heart disease. Amsterdam 2005 - lowers the risk of diabetes, Columbia 2006 – stroke, Iceland 2003 – cataracts. The American Journal of Gastroenterology (if you can no longer say this word, you’ve reached your moderation limit) says it can reduce the risk of colon cancer. Everything from acne to weight loss to dental health. Yes, that’s right. Wine, especially red wine, is the super-food of super-foods!
Another study done in Finland in 2007 found that wine drinkers have a 34% lower mortality rate than drinkers of beer or spirits. Now that you have the evidence to convert your beer guzzling, whiskey sipping compadres, we are here to help. At Bent Oak Winery, we have wine tastings every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
And we just might know where you can find some chocolate to go with it as well...right next door!
